Director General's Message
This is Kim Tae-Man, Chief Director of the Korea National Maritime Museum.
We are maritime people. For the last 5,000 years of history, we have preserved maritime spaces which are far wider and deeper than continents. The maritime capabilities inherited in our DNA have been handed down as they are from generation to generation till today. History reflects that we are maritime people. The proof of this begins with the Bangudae Petroglyphs which record evidence of whale hunting in the prehistoric age. Then chronologically: Jang Bogo, who led the maritime economy in ancient East Asia; Yi Sunsin, who led the nation to victory in the maritime war during the Great Transition Period of East Asia; and finally, the shipbuilding and logistics industry which led the country’s expansion of maritime power in the age of modern industrialization.
Since its opening in 2012, more than 1 million citizens have visited the Korea National Maritime Museum, which is regarded as a 'maritime cultural space' of global significance. Now, the Korea National Maritime Museum is ready to make a dramatic transition from the phase of 'quantitative growth' to 'qualitative maturity.'
The museum covers the fields of maritime history, maritime science, marine lives, and maritime industry based on the nation’s 5,000 years of maritime culture, and we continue to collect relics and artifacts related to shipping, harbors, shipbuilding, marine lives, and maritime civilization. At the same time, in order to keep our status and position as a world-class comprehensive maritime museum leading the 21st century, we are strengthening our capabilities of domestic and overseas networking, education, exhibition, research, preservation, and excavation of maritime relics to a global level.
The Korea National Maritime Museum will continue to operate as a world class facility that shares and empathizes with maritime culture by providing the best 'cultural service' for ‘cosmopolitan people'.
All of the executives and staff members of the Korea National Maritime Museum together, as one, would like to provide you with the happiest and most pleasant maritime experience in the world.
